Why Harbor

Self-custody isn't just about security. It's about ownership.

The Problem with Traditional Messaging

When you use a traditional messaging app, you're trusting a company with your most private conversations. Even with "end-to-end encryption," there are trust assumptions:

  • Key management — The company manages key distribution and often has the ability to inject keys or intercept key exchanges
  • Metadata — Who you talk to, when, and how often is visible to the provider
  • Account control — Your access depends on the company's policies and continued operation
  • Code verification — You can't verify that the encryption is actually working as claimed

Self-Custody Changes Everything

With Harbor, you generate your own cryptographic keys on your device. These keys never leave your device and are never transmitted to any server. This means:

  • No key escrow — There's no company that holds a copy of your keys or can recover them
  • No account to disable — Your identity is your keys. As long as you have your keys, you have access
  • Verifiable security — The protocol is transparent and can be verified
  • True ownership — Your communication history belongs to you, not a platform

Why Base

Harbor uses Base (an Ethereum L2) for message delivery instead of centralized servers. This provides:

  • Censorship resistance — No single entity can prevent message delivery
  • Availability — Messages are stored on a distributed network, not a single server that can go offline
  • Transparency — The delivery mechanism is verifiable and auditable
  • Low cost — Base L2 provides low transaction fees while inheriting Ethereum's security

The Tradeoff

Self-custody comes with responsibility. If you lose your keys without a backup, your identity and messages are permanently lost. There is no "forgot password" or "account recovery" because there's no company that holds your keys.

This is a feature, not a bug. It's the same tradeoff you make with Bitcoin: true ownership means true responsibility.

Harbor is for people who:

  • Value privacy and don't want to trust a company with their conversations

If you're looking for a "set it and forget it" messaging app with account recovery and customer support, Harbor may not be for you. But if you want true ownership of your communications, Harbor provides that option.
